Innovative Substitute Staffing Solutions For a Better Classroom
2016 Michigan Substitute of the Year, presented by EDUStaff
EDUStaff would like to congratulate Olivia Gary for receiving the 2016 Michigan Substitute of the Year Award. Olivia was nominated by seven teachers in Marshall Public Schools based on her outstanding service, love for students, and willingness to help wherever and whenever she is needed. Olivia “is a wonderful role model and a positive influence for our students. She goes above and beyond our expectations and is always helping the students.”
After graduating from Marshall High School in 2009, Olivia attended Wayne State University with academic
and athletic scholarships. After a couple years, she transferred to Grand Valley State University to finish her degree in psychology. Currently, she is attending Michigan State University’s Accelerated Second Degree BSN program. She expects to graduate at the end of next summer with plans to be a registered nurse in a trauma center.
Olivia got started subbing after she spent time tutoring high school students at Marshall Alternative High School. The staff and students made Olivia feel extremely appreciated, so she decided to start working with an entire class instead of one-on-one or small group help. She enjoys bringing a new spin to the material teachers leave in their lesson plans. Nothing makes her day better than having a frustrated student experience that “a-ha!” moment and then thank her for not giving up on them.
Olivia was honored by Clark Galloway, President of EDUStaff, during an open Marshall Public School Board meeting on June 27, 2016. She received a special trophy and an award for being selected as the 2016 Michigan Substitute of the Year.
