2017 Michigan Substitute of the Year presented by EDUStaff

Esther McCall was nominated by 19 individuals from Buchanan Elementary in Grand Rapids Public Schools because she is an extraordinary woman and teacher. Esther stepped in to long-term positions midway through the past two years to fill in during extreme crisis both years. She provided a smooth transition, consistency, guidance, compassion, structure, and care to her students when they needed it most.

EDUStaff received glowing nominations for Esther, including:

“Ms. McCall has been a true asset to our team, and she always goes the extra mile with our students – as well as being a great collaborator.”

“She is family and staff here at Buchanan Elementary. We would have been lost without her and the resources she brings. We are able to learn so much from her as an educator and as a graceful person.”

Esther began her professional career as a bookkeeper at a car dealership. She left the dealership to return to college. Life changes sent her back into the workforce and she spent the next 20 years working in the heavy truck component manufacturing industry as a bookkeeper, accounting analyst, and finished as a cost accountant at one of their manufacturing plants. The years of experience gained in the automotive industry led to a position in consulting that she pursued for the next ten years. Esther has her bachelor’s and master’s degrees.

Esther started subbing at Grand Rapids Public Schools in 2009 for preschool to fifth grade classes. Her first long-term assignment was at Buchanan Elementary where she met the wonderful staff who she subs for frequently. She says she subs because she enjoys making a difference in the lives of the students. It is important to her to make a contribution to the lives of the students in the community. She believes in discipline, but fairness, and takes that into every classroom.

Esther was honored by Clark Galloway, President of EDUStaff, during an open Grand Rapids Public School Board meeting on June 5, 2017. She received a special trophy and an award for being selected as the 2017 Michigan Substitute of the Year.
